Voice of experience on the 400.  About  1 year ago we went from a 310 to a
320.  When the hardware guys made the transfer they forgot to apply the cum
tape.  Within a week we had files start to self-distruct.  Before we had a
chance to load the cums we had a consultant decide to 'fix' the file.  Talk
about distruction!   We applied the cum and a ptf cured the problem with
all of the 'damaged' objects, except the one being 'fixed'.  The file, with
about 15 mil records and 15 logicals took a couple of weeks to finish
repairing.  Just an FYI.  If you have a problem....call IBM.  They
probably have a ptf.

In the past it was possible to get a damaged index on a file. The only
way to fix it was to delete and recreate the index. If the damaged index
was on a logical, all you had to do was recreate the logical. Physical
files were another story. You couldn't copy the data because of the
damage. You also couldn't reorg the file to recover. The only option
was to restore from a backup.

I actually had this happen to me, but it was back on the S/38. I've never
heard of it happening on the AS/400 and I've been told (can't remember
who) that it can't happen anymore.
