These 8mm drives can take a tape thats formatted up to *FMT7GB. The message is basically warning you that you aren't formatting the tapes to the "standard" format for that device - ie 7gb. Of course you'll need to have tapes that are capable of being formatted to 7gb - I haven't got any Maxell ones, but my Exabyte tapes are "160m XL". Data transfer should be circa 500Kb/sec uncompressed, with up to 1Mb/sec compressed. I can't find any info as to settings for data compression/compaction for this drive. However, in the Backup & Recovery manual, the recommended settings for our internal 8mm drive(6390) is DTACPR *DEV, COMPACT *DEV, USEOPTBLK *NO. I'd experiment with the latter to see if it makes any difference.
