He was feeding that thing with huge SETACST brings - as fast as the disk
subsystem could force it in.  SORT is almost always IO bound so he did the
best he could to make it CPU bound.  Index building has the same problem -
almost always IO-limited.  Dick is fairly good at performance and language
issues ;)
