I recently was given a white paper which stated if you do not journal then
you should not be using save while active.

That white paper sounds incorrect.  If you have it in machine readable form, could you forward it to my private address, otherwise (if it's not a zillion pages), could you fax it to me.

There are two ways to use SWA: If you do not quiecese, you must be using journaling, and commitment control in every multi file HLL program.  Otherwise you could be saving bad data.  The system will permit you to use the easy way without a quiescence period, and will tell you that your save was good, even if it wasn't!

I did an article on SWA a few years ago in the AS/400 Experts Journal.  The article is essentially current, and if you send me private e-mail to my private e-mail account (see footer of this note), I will send it to you.  (This applies to anyone that reads this note..)

I did a video on it about 5 years ago for Midrange Computing.  It's fairly dated, but it's very discounted because of this.  Very quick to watch if you speed through to only see the sexy parts:-)))))

I do a talk at COMMON, and likewise I could send the handout, but you kind of need to see the talk.

Can anyone validate this statement or is it safe to use save while active
without journaling.

Also, is anyone using Robot/Save and is it a good product for providing save
and restore.

I do not know is Robot/Save handles SWA.  My knowledge of this company is limited to my observation that they are the marketing equivalent of Micro$oft on the AS/400.

To my knowledge, BRMS is the only product that handles this, but I could be wrong.  A little birdie tells me that BRMS will bet much more user friendly in the next few releases.
