Unfortunately I have had more experience than I EVER wanted to with drives and
stiction and you will NEVER forget that sound if you have heard it, and unless 
there
is a good deal of other noise in the area, you should indeed hear it !!!

I tend to agree that it is something "in front of" the drives, because you would
SURELY hear something with 8 drives trying to spin up and I can't imagine ALL 8 
died
at once !!!
