The system is the system. The system is not the box. The system involves several things: the box(es) the network the software the operations Downtime could be caused by any number of things. The change to NT could just duplicate the same problems. They might continue to have comm problems, if they store the server off site. They might continue to have operations problems - "screw time differences, we'll back up when we want to". Or "stay out while we run period end". They might continue to have software problems - "stay out when we do this, and God is it slow". Yet, often a change in some components results in a change in many. For example, so as not to have egg on their faces, the NT people might move from two Dixie cups and a string to a more resilient comm solution. Having operations in many states, and a few countries, has taught us a few tricks. Like our division in Colorado that thought our comm solution was expensive until their fly-by-night internet provider folded. Granted, in these lean times, some are thinking of either how to utilize their T1's better, or even drop back to frame relay. Plant manager for a plastics company) and I were talking a few months back and I asked him what type of computers they used at work he basically told me me it was some peice of crapola called the as/400 and he was trying to convince management to move to NT. After talking with him a little longer I discovered he was complaing that the system was down all of the time. His 400 is in California he works in Houston, tx what he was really complaining about was his connection to the 400. With people like my pop complaing about the 400 how does an MIS staff stand a chance with management when it comes time to evaluate the 400.... <endsnip> +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +--- +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
