Distance isn't the only issue ... if your lines cross a "public thorofare",
they need to be provided by the phone system (you, in this case) ... that
also means a modem /  remote controller.

BTW:  There was a posting on the Ignite/400 list concerning a hacker asking
for information on an AS/400 in a telephone company ... I hope that this
isn't your company.
