Actually for low volume local users the dial up ain't bad.  We used to have
a 5494 at the other end of town.  Left the dial up going all day.  Local
phone company figured more and more modem users were doing this.  They
counterattacked and talked about having a length of call charge or some
ridiculous thing.  An army of little old ladies counterattacked and said
they are on the phone for hours to people and how dare they punish poor old
shut-ins.  We won.

Twinax is 5,250'(one mile) while most twisted pair I have seen is
usually under 500'.... I suspect you are looking at a remote
controller and a telephone line for those folks....(5394-5494)

Since you work for the telephone company, a dedicated line would be
the way to go.....(4 wire) but lower volume users could be put on
a cheap dial line and run just fine at 33.6 kbps...
