A simple thing most people can do to keep their connectin from
timing out is set their email client to check the server every x/2
minutes, where x is the timeout period.

By the way this timeout is usually set on the server for security
reasons, to keep a line from being left open, usually on a dialup
connection. There isn't much sense for it othersie, unless the
machine is heavily loaded and they are trying to detach unused
sessions,

Or it could be settings left in default positions by people who do
not even realize they are set that way.
