Patricia:

First let's not forget that there have been many an LPP that was chargeable
in the past - yet there was no way to control access as there is today with
license keys - so many folks installed but did not pay for the option.
They then complained when they were called on it at V4R4 and above.

As for MSE, it is a prerequisite for BRMS and has been listed on the Keyed
Stamped Media Distribution since V4R4. If you were to use an application
which hits any of the APIs that are a part of MSE, then yes you would need
to license that program.

MSE is not required for the "normal" OS/400 save commands, although having
it installed and expired can prevent them from functioning properly.

As for whether or not this should be a chargeable feature. . . . . . . that
is most likely up for some debate.

Has anyone heard about this? What do you think?

IBM'S DECISION WILL COST YOU
We want to let you know about a decision that IBM recently made. When you
upgrade to OS/400 V5R1, you will have to license the IBM Media and Storage
Extensions (MSE) feature to run any backup and recovery software program,
including Robot/SAVE. This is because IBM has now included a necessary
tapeexit API in MSE. This API was FREE for many years. Now, IBM wants you
to
pay for it. The license for this feature will cost you about $1,000 per
machine...... If
you would like to voice your concerns to IBM, write to Kimberly Stevenson,
Vice President, iSeries, Marketing, Server Group. Her e-mail address is
kantwell@us.ibm.com. She can reverse this decision, if she wants to.
