I believe Andrew was referring to the ability in 5.1 to use "classic"
interfaces to PTFs but have the AS/400 communicate over the net.
Specifically, SNDPTFORD would now work over the internet.

We order PTF's quite often via the internet. In the IBM spirit of trying to
hire the most people for the most meaningless tasks it involves much
clicking of icons. Basically you get a PC with 'socks' loaded on it. Then
you point your browser to:
http://as400service.rochester.ibm.com/p_dir/ptforder.nsf
Of which you must have a valid support contract and be registered. Once you
order your PTF there is this pause and it will prompt you for your 400's
name, userid and password. Then it pulls the information from
WRKCNTINF-Option 2. Verifies that with you and then starts downloading the
PTF to your 400. Stores it at a save file. WRKPRB will even show the
download. For more information look at:
http://www-912.ibm.com/supporthome.nsf/document/10000083
I wish this was supported directly on the 400 for the following reasons
1) the 400 has a GB ethernet card - my PC does not.
2) I could programmatically order PTF's versus clicking on stuff
3) I could do this stuff at off hours via the job scheduler.

There is another web site if you just want the stuff sent to you on media. I
like this versus the green screen method because you'll get 3 emails
1) We got your order and this is the order number
2) 1 above and this is the Airborne number
3) 2 above and Airborne has picked it up.
Could be improved with a direct link to the airborne web site, prefilled
with the airborne number of course. For this go here:

One question and maybe an answer:

Doesn't the LAN console require a dedicated LAN card?

On the Internet PTFs, the V4 way was to connect via web browser, then do an
automated FTP transfer from IBM to your PC, which flows through to the
AS/400 using Client Access file transfer (all automated). Ended up as a
Savf on the 400 so you had to apply the PTF from a Savf source.

|3) LAN Console - if you have a 270 or 8xx box, and hate the cold of
|your computer room - the console is accessible over your lan. BUT...
|the passwords are expired when you upgrade to V5R1M0 so WATCH IT!!!
|
|Anyone know how to install the "Over the internet" PTF ordering/ECS
|stuff? The CD wasn't exactly clear...
