With the greatest of respect, the SQL concept of NULL is not the same as
placing x'00' in a field.  The confusion arises out of an unfortunate naming
convention.  SQL NULL is an attribute of the column, like size, type and
text.  SQL NULL is not related to the contents of the field, which can be
other than x'00'.  Likewise, placing x'00' in a null capable field means
nothing to SQL.  SQL NULL will be FALSE for that field.
