Buck,

I know that the field is not variable and ALWNULL is not specified as I
created the file. When I do native I/O to the thing, it works fine. At this
point, I'm just trying to determine why I see the data as X'40' in DSPPFM
and X'00' in DBU.

I'd DSPFFD the file and see if the field in question is variable length or
has ALWNULL.
