Go for the degree.

It is important.  You can get by without it (nicely), but if possible, I'd
get the paper.

In college, the professor-types talk about "the college experience".  It was
many years later until I realized what that meant.  It really does (help)
open up things.

A lady who was doing QA in my department once asked me "Do you have to have
a degree to do what you do?"
I told her to ask me again tomorrow, I needed to think about it.

My answer was: "No, you don't have to have a degree.  But it helps you see
over the fence".

It'll also get you an interview that you could not get without it.  After
you get the interview, it's up to you.

When I started on the '400 (working for an IBM VAR on the 36), they were
trying to decide whether to call it "System/40" or "Silverlake".  The
experience counts for way more (in reality) than the paper.  But, I'm still
glad I got the paper.

And I have actually referred back to my notes (I think a half-dozen times)
