Good question Dan!

I've kept up as well as I could by buying the course books, prowling through
major bookstores and subscribing to industry publications (Proceedings of
the ACM for instance.)  I started out working for a small company with Very
Tight budgets.  Never had the spare income to get the degree.  After years
of putting it off I have almost convinced myself that I'm too old to start
now.

I have always worked for small companies, and without a degree I will always
have to.  Given that attitude, there's little self-pressure to get a degree.
But the industry may be working against me.  Despite my experience, it
appears that the small company and good wages I've enjoyed recently may be
fast becoming obsolete.  Either the little company sheds expensive employees
to stay alive or they're bought out by big companies.  At least that's where
we seem to be in the business cycle now.
