Some good thoughts. I have received 3 PTFs dealing with tape drive problems that I am looking to apply. The PTFs reference that I need to vary off via a reset the controller that the tapes are on. How do I find this controller name? Although normal problem solving would certainly indicate that this is the cause. Is it possible if the drive lost some of its configuration information during your upgrade process? Perhaps because it was powered off or the microcode was reloaded? If I'm recalling correctly, this is the difference between 18-track and 36-track tapes. Because not all models provide write support for the older 18-track tapes, is it possible that your hardware is being recognized as a different model?
