So why not simply ask the recipient to respond quickly saying (s)he got
your message? IMHO, that's the advantage of email over fax -- it's easier
to dash off a quick reply.

Also, wasn't the original question related to notifying suppliers when
inventory is low? In today's economy, is Fred really going to duck the
opportunity to sell more stuff to you? (And if he does, do you really want
to keep buying from him?)
