Richard,

I tried to ping in my prelim testing and i think they are blocking pings.
it's a bank, and they're a bit paranoid about that type of thing...

but the rtvcfgsts sounds like the ticket. Thanks!

Hi Rick,

Try using the PING command. What happens if you PING the remote system
before the PPP dialup connection has completed? If it just returns an
error,
you could try CL code like this.

 LOOP: PING RMTSYS(remotesystem) MSGMODE(*QUIET *ESCAPE)
             MONMSG MSGID(TCP3210 TCP3202) EXEC(GOTO CMDLBL(ERR))
             GOTO CMDLBL(CONT)
 ERR: DLYJOB DLY(60)
             GOTO CMDLBL(LOOP)
CONT: ... do the FTP ...

Another option might be to use the RTVCFGSTS command to retrieve the status
of the PPP device.

             DCL VAR(&STS) TYPE(*DEC) LEN(5 0)
 LOOP: RTVCFGSTS CFGD(device) CFGTYPE(*DEV) STSCDE(&STS)
             IF COND(&STS *NE xx) THEN(DO)
               DLYJOB DLY(60)
               GOTO CMDLBL(LOOP)
             ENDDO
             ... do the FTP ...

The "xx" in the IF statement is the value you are checking for. If you
prompt the RTVCFGSTS command and get help on the "CL variable for status
code", you can see what the different values are (60=ACTIVE, 40=CONNECT
PENDING, etc).

Hope this helps!
Richard Casey
