I'm reminded of a problem where the object being used isn't actually the
object that was changed.  Since it appears the PR attribute used to be
conditioned, you should get a level check when invoking the recompiled
program if the original display file is higher in your library list than the
changed one.  Unless, of course, the program being called is the original
program. 

I would use option 3 and then option 14 from the system request menu to
determine which display file is open.  Then use option 11 to determine which
program is being executed.

a field which has been protected for some combinations now needs to be open.

I've completely removed the (PR) attribute from the subfile field, but it
still shows up (PR).  It has to be a combination of attributes causing this.
