I haven't done it yet, but I've seen SQL used on the fly for sorting subfiles 
and it's worked nicely.  I just learned how to do the PREPARE type SQL 
statements and it worked well.  I would give that a shot.

Why not use SQL?  It's lends itself to being built on the fly and is less
error prone than an OPNQRYF statement.  The performance would be about the
same I think.
