There's some kind of white paper from IBM on this. I think it's been referred to on this list. The solutions include Java and something called DataJoiner. Look at <http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas15a3856efecb7f19f8625672b006cee76&rs=110>.

I am looking for a way to directly access data stored on a MS SQL server.
When I try adding the Relation Data Base Directory Entry (ADDRDBDIRE) then
try to connect using STRSQL and CONNECT TO DATABASENAME I always get a
communication error, SQ30080 Communication error occurred during distributed
database processing. The user ID and password does exist. What port should
I use? Is there a special driver program for the AS400? Do I need special
software on the SQL Server? I would really like to embed the SQL directly
into the RPG and not have to copy the data at all. OS400 V5R1 => SQL 8.0 on
