Don,

I know that, given the current economic climate, it's tough for an iSeries
developer to put demands on their employers. If your employer says no
RPGIV, no ILE, no SQL, no web, no XML, no fun stuff, then you're not going
to get experience with this on the job.

But... if that same iSeries developer won't do something like download the
JDK from Sun and buy the Java in 21 Days book, or won't download a free
webserver like Apache or Xitami or LWS and do a little web development,
then they are also to blame. You shouldn't be forced to do this, but...

I suppose I'm lucky; our shop will let us play with all the new toys and
techniques.

Mike,
Sorry, you're not the first to point-out my mis-statement. I meant that
iSeries developers are lacking the new technology skills, i.e. Web, XML,
OOA&D, CGI, Java, etc.

I agree that they have a great deal of skill and business knowledge.
That's
the point that I have been trying to make. Add those pre-existing skills
to
new technology skills and you have a the skills that the PC community
haven't been able to offer, yet. I believe that the hard part is behind
them, the skills that they already have are the skills that take years &
years to develop.

Don
