I do the "log in" method, as well as ping the servers (if allowed on that particular server). >From the AS/400, one thing I like to do is ping localhost to see if TCP/IP is running, before wasting time trying to ping other systems. One problem with the "log in" method is the inability to determine whether the network connection or the FTP server is down. (You could ping a known server, such as Yahoo, or an internal server, which might narrow down network problems.) I wish there were a standard way (other than port scanning) to determine if a service is listening on a particular port - ping a port. Hopefully there is and I just don't know about it.
