That was not the problem. The problem was that the tape from backup #1 was 
manually reloaded erroneously and then the second backup wrote to it again.

There is a KNOWN bug that is affecting the *UNLOAD of tapes in BRMS
procedures... 

Apply PTF SI0362  (V5R2) ....

This fixed the problem for us.
