Jeff,

Don't know if it will do offline duping.

We had a LARGE library composed of just a few LARGE objects used by an 
older version of Tivoli Storage Manager to back up PC's.  (The newer 
version is all IFS.)  We used SAVOBJ instead of SAVLIB.  And spread out 
the objects over two 3581 tape drives, each using 6 tapes.  Running 
simultaneously.  Now one 3582 does it in the same amount of time and using 
only 6 tapes total.

If you use a large number of tapes, etc that may impact the Cost of 
Ownership of the 3581's.  That and the maintenance cost when they go off 
warranty.  Two versus one.

What card will you be driving the 3581's with?  It's not on this website 
is it?

Probably not.  Especially if you aren't moving anything from your old 
machines.  But might be a lesson to be learned.

Will the 3582 do an 'offline' dup?  Without using i5/os I mean?  We used 
to
do that with an 8mm we had years ago.  Now, with the 3570, we use the 
DUPTAP
command.

We're getting a new 520 (ordering soon) and it is cheaper to order 2 3581
drives than a single 3582.  The only benefit I could see, for us, of 
getting
a 3582 is offline dupping.

In either case, it will be better than the 3570 frives. <g>
