Marty, the more I think about it, the more I think you are correct. I will concentrate on looking at the physical stuff (modem), comm resource and perhaps the PPP config, before I start blaming the FTP client. Come to think of it, I used the FTP client on this box to connect to my system to download several patches for our software, and never once had a problem (over Ethernet as opposed to PPP). I will be over at the client's location tomorrow. cjg Carl J. Can you tell, after the PPP lockup, whether the modems have actually lost their connection (perhaps status of line description)? I am not familiar with the 7258 but I was never a big fan of the 7852-400 compared to IBM's older "serious" modems. Kind of tough since you don't have physical access. Given that restriction, I would try to find the commands to add to the modem initialization string, perhaps even a change in the LIND, that would DECREASE the speed of the connection between the two modems (DCE-to-DCE rate) perhaps to 14400 or even 9600. Also, I would try telling the modem NOT to dynamically try to negotiate a higher rate during the connection. Basically just make things real easy on the modems and see if that improves the consistency of your PPP link. Sure this is going to hurt your performace but if the reliability improves markedly then you'll know where the problem lies. My two cents. -Marty ------------------------------ date: Fri, 3 Dec 2004 12:06:38 -0500 from: "Carl Galgano" <cgalgano2@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> subject: RE: Intermittent problem with FTP client V5R2 over PPP Marty, all good suggestions. The comm adapters are different between my machine and the customers, also the modems, I am using a UDS V.3xxx and the customer is using an IBM 7258-400. The standard IBM FTP client does hang as well. Sometimes it works perfectly, other times it does not. The modem is external, but I am in Atlanta, with the systems group, the AS400 and other hardware is in Omaha, so looking at the modem is out. They have a production box I am going to load up as well and see if the problem follows the box, the OS or the hardware. That will give me an idea where to hunt next. It appears the entire PPP link locks up, rather than just my FTP session. cjg -- This is the Midrange Systems Technical Discussion (MIDRANGE-L) mailing list To post a message email: MIDRANGE-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/midrange-l or email: MIDRANGE-L-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-l.
