EVI - Encoded Vector Index.  It contains information on how many records for a 
specific key are contained in a table.  It is used by the SQL optimizer to help 
determine the best way to implement a query.  Depending on your file size they 
can be rather large.

Would this be a good situation to try an EVI?  My understanding is that they
are specifically designed to speed up Data Selection where the Selected On
field has a limited number of values.  That appears to apply to your
situation.  I'm just not clear if it works with OPNQRYF or only works with
SQL.  MC Press Online had an article on this not too long ago.
