Can I write my own printer driver?

Any particularly good resources for getting started?

You can, but it's not neccesarily simple. :) I'd start by firsting determining if a *WSCST object will work. If all you have to do is create a *WSCST object, this won't be too difficult.

If that doesn't work, you can write an actual driver program. There's an option called USRDRVPGM on the CRTDEVPRT command where you can specify the name of a driver program.

Then, in the APIs section of the Information Center, it tells you about a "Printer Driver Exit Program", how it gets called, what parameters are passed to it, etc.

You'll find the docs for the exit program under:
Programming -> APIs -> APIs by Category -> Print -> General Print APIs

Scroll to the end of the page, that's where the exit programs are listed.
