To speed up the loading of Acrobat Reader, disable/hide most or all of
the plugins.  There in Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat
(version)\Reader\plug_ins. On version 5 I used to just rename that
directory so the reader couldn't find it.  Load times for Acrobat Reader
dropped to about 1 second.  I renamed it back if I had trouble with a
doc or needed a plugin for some reason.  However, you many need one or
more plugins for normal usage so another option is to rename/hide the
plug ins you don't use.

Agreed, but there must be something better than PDF.  The files are
relatively large and take too long to open.  Then again, that may be the
Acrobat Reader's fault rather than the format.

Just so you know, there is a free reader available for Word documents,
though it only runs on Windows.

I just think that PDF is not tied to a proprietary format like Word.
You can download a free PDF reader for Windows, Mac, etc.
