Actually, 3487s, 3488s, and 3489s are typically only about 10-15 years old, and 3477s are only a bit older than that. More to the point, the fact that they're still functional after all those years is testimony to the fact that they're built like tanks. And by the way, it wouldn't be the sugar that shorted anything out: it's an insulator and a nonelectrolyte. It could, however, gum something up mechanically, as well as keep it from drying out completely. Most likely, it was the mineral content of the water that did it in, with various hygroscopic ingredients (including the sugar) keeping the minerals moist enough to act as electrolytes. Incidentally, does anybody have a trick for keeping worn right-shift keys from jamming? I've tried a number of things, including plastic-compatible model locomotive grease, without much improvement.
