YMMV.  Joe Pluta did a lot of SQL vs Read time trials and posted the 
results somewhere.  Others were allowed to chime in.  I forget the link.

A lot has to do with blocking factor, etc.  I would think that the SQL 
would have the same number of I/O's.  Perhaps the associate was thinking 
of FETCH FIRST x ROWS into a MODS or DIMed data structure?  Not sure if 
that cuts down the number of physical I/O's.
