My original point was that MS did *not* invent DOS.  They bought it 
($50k if I recall correctly) from Seattle Computing.  They had to buy an 
operating system because they told IBM, during the development of the 
original PC, "Sure, we've got an operating system for you."  That's not 
innovation, but it might, in today's environment, be construed as some 
sort of insider information.
