I really haven't had any issues lately with the HMC locking up.  Since you 
have to have an HMC anyway for an i5 with multiple i5/OS partitions, why 
not use it for the console?  You already have the maintenance required to 
sync HMC code, FSP firmware, hardware and i5/OS so that's taken out of the 
equation.
