Justin,
One thing to add to your analysis about the HMC as the console. I
like the HMC, and think its a great way to manage your partitions. The
only problem when you use the HMC as the console, is that you have
unlocked your Server, HMC profiles, and HMC Config wide open. I would
like to be able to lock these functions, while allowing the HMC console(s)
to be used by operations staff. I see that as a Major negative for the
HMC as the console. If you use one of the other methods for a console,
you can lock the HMC (like you do any PC) where you need a password to
open it back up.

Here's my opinion of the four choices:
HMC = sweet - you can even remote console if you set it up right
Twinax = thick gangly cables, but rarely fails (and on the way out)
LAN console = BLECCH!!!!!
Ops console = BLECCH!!!!!
I often think that the people who designed the HMC wanted it to be
thought of not only as the Hardware Management Console, but the Heavenly
Marshmallow Creampuff. Such luxurious computing it provides.
Little low on coffee - sorry. Hope it made you chuckle.

I really haven't had any issues lately with the HMC locking up. Since
you have to have an HMC anyway for an i5 with multiple i5/OS partitions,
why not use it for the console? You already have the maintenance
required to sync HMC code, FSP firmware, hardware and i5/OS so that's
taken out of the equation.

what console issues?
Earlier this year there was considerable traffic on this list about HMC
issues (whether
they were used for console I do not know...)

I doubt it will come with v5r3m5. I believe that it reserved for the
systems that use the new boot from san IOP.
what console issues?? If you mean lan console, then I think it is
much
better thean it was in v5r1.
Since you have two partitions you have 4 console choices; twinax, ops
console, lan console and HMC.
Choose the best for your environment.

If new box shipped now (520) then will it be V5R3M5?
Have console issues been solved?
This box will run at least 2 partitions.
Any comments?
