I assume Dave speaks of the 3-digit codes in the status messages 
returned from the FTP server. These codes are described at

The exact codes used and text associated with them may differ between 
servers, and some servers don't return messages for conditions that 
other servers do. Compare the information at

with that at the first site listed above.
