i5 External Disk Questions

Does anyone use external Disk?  I'm finding that I need to add a tremendous 
amount of disk for an archive function.  Internal disk works great, but it's 
way more expensive than I can justify.

My vendor says they have used FASTT / EXP400 and JETSTORE, But I don't know 
anything about any of these.  One of my coworkers has spected out an Xserver 
RAID solution from Apple Store.

What do I need to look at.  What are the 'gotchas'.  I know I saw somewhere 
where there is a external disk 'problem' between i5s and fiber attached disks 
of certain kinds.  I just don't remember where I saw this information.

Any input to increase my limited knowledge would be much appreciated.
