In fact, 504 doesn't sound right according to:

At your DOS command prompt try
ftp myiSeries...
log in using your iSeries account

While that ftp session is still active go to a 5250 session and try 
WRKOBJLCK youriSeriesprofile *USRPRF
One of the jobs shown should be a QTFTP##### job.  5 - wrkjob, 10-joblog
Right after you get that 504 error, and before you QUIT, see if anything 
is in that joblog.
