If you have any 3rd party software. We just went thru
a weekend of many extra hours chasing a problem in our security exit point software.
Just because the managers couldn't imagine why that software would need it,
doesn't mean its not there. We also found a few of our own application programs doing a RTVNETA and checking system name to determine if on our TEST partition.

Subject: What could be affected by changing System Name versus Control pt name?

Does anyone know what is affected if I change the System Name on CHGNETA but
leave the Local Control point name as is? Am I right in thinking that
iSeries Access looks at the LCP Name and not the System name?? Is there
anything apart from BRMS that might look at the System Name? (Snads is not
being used). Also, I know that it is recommended that the System Name and
LCP name should be the same, but does anyone know why?? I have trawled
through the previous correspondence/IBM stuff on this, and am still not
sure!
I would like to change the system names of the boxes that are still called
S+serialno to make things easier for international e-mail, but I don't want
to break anything on those systems.

thanks,

Clare

Subject: Re: SMTP: How to configure ? - can't get Email from AS/400

I have some instructions at:

http://www.bvstools.com/docs/mailtool/faq.html.

These are for setting up the IBM STMP server to send mail.
They work like a charm.

They are for my MAILTOOL utility but should work for SNDDST
as well. There's also the option of skipping this all
together with the use of my MAILTOOL utility which can send
emails and totally ignore/bypass with sometimes "unstable"
IBM STMP server. You can check this out at
www.bvstools.com/mailtool.html.

Here's the SMTP setup that works for me::

a) Make sure your system is connected (somehow) to the
Internet, and that
DNS is working properly. TCP/IP is set up with the
following command:

      CFGTCP

b) Verify that TCP/IP is working. To test it, I usually
type the
following:

      TELNET RMTSYS('ods.ods.net')

If all is well, you'll get a nifty looking screen where
you have to type a
user-id at the bottom. Don't bother signing in, if you
get to the userid
prompt, it works. Just disconnect by hitting ATTN, and
taking option 99.

c) Configure the iSeries old mail stuff with the ability
to forward to the
Internet:

        ADDDIRE USRID(INTERNET GATEWAY) USRD('Context
+
                    switching entry') SYSNAME(INTERNET) +
                    TEXT('Sending e-mail to +
                    Internet') MSFSRVLVL(*USRIDX) +
                    PREFADR(NETUSRID *IBM ATCONTXT)

        CHGDSTA SMTPRTE(INTERNET GATEWAY)

d) In most cases, you'll want to relay your e-mail
through your ISPs SMTP
server -- unless of course, you've got your own server
that you'd rather
use. While it's possible for the iSeries to deliver the
mail directly, I
don't recommend it unless you know what you're doing. To
make e-mail go
through an SMTP relay:

        CHGSMTPA MAILROUTER('smtp.myprovider.com')
FIREWALL(*YES)

e) Sometimes SNDDST will split messages up. Turn it off
using the
following command (yes, this works even if you're not
using the POP
server):
        CHGPOPA MSGSPLIT(*NOMAX)

f) To make SMTP start automatically when TCP/IP is
started:
        CHGSMTPA AUTOSTART(*YES)

g) To start SMTP manually:
        STRTCPSVR SERVER(*SMTP)
