Ah, that explains why your sql statement doesn't blow up on the where
clause.

So this intermediary program leaves you in some kind of parallel CW
universe where all the field definitions are different ?  Is there no
item master file available to you there ? 

In the regular CW world, I would have done your query like this:

SELECT A.ASCOMP AS COMPANY,
TRIM ( A.ASBECD ) AS ITEM,
B.AREOTX AS ITEMDESCRIP
FROM CWMPDTA.INIOFR A INNER JOIN CWMPDTA.INITEM B
ON A.ASCOMP = B.ARCOMP and A.ASBECD =  B.ARBECD
WHERE A.ASCOMP = 1
