SQL multiformat logical

Is there some way to do a multiformat logical file in SQL?  Or, instead of 
that is there something else I can do to fit that same bill?  Must be SQL 
and not DDS.  We're not really talking about any particularly large files. 
 Actually a small set of transaction data.  Like a days' worth of EDI 
transmissions perhaps.  I am wondering if, instead of the multiformat 
logical file I do something like
CREATE TABLE...  AS SELECT ... UNION this and that and the other thing. 
Make sense?
