About the only place I see multiformat logical files (that aren't carryovers from the olden days) are EDI applications. Some translator packages have you set up multiple physical files. Then, you use a multiformat logical file to tie them together. Then the EDI translator reads the multiformat logical file. Getting the translator to work directly with the physicals (and not totally screw up the process) isn't going to happen. Rob Berendt
