The battery being referred to is on the RAID card. It protects the cache
from an extended power down. 90 days before the cache battery is
projected to fail messages are sent to the QSYSOPR and/or QSYSMSG
message queues to schedule replacement and the problem is reported via
ECS. When the battery fails, the RAID card stops using the cache so the
disk operations have to wait for the actual writes to disk to complete
which slows down the system.

Am I the only one wondering why an as400 would need batteries?

I can understand the need for them as a backup, or for retaining config
values, but for normal use in hardware?
