I look at value (which incidentally is why i use */i/*Yes a windoze machine may cost a few bucks but it's likely that you have an old machine around that nobody really wants any longer that is plenty for this task. You may also have a KVM in the DC to connect it to so no keyboard, rodent, or display need be purchased either. The software required is provided with i5/OS.
When you consider that every single time you need to to dedicated system stuff with my old 5291-002 you need to be in front of it while with the Ops Console solution you may save yourself several trips to the office over it's life. Therefore I maintain that the ops console solution is long term cheaper than el dumbo. Very much like your */i/* is long term be cheaper than Windoze servers.

I disagree Larry, it is cheaper to use an old tube or to buy thin client rather than buy a windows computer for the console.Larry Bolhuis wrote:Slap Paul for suggesting a Twinax card!Small i5 = LAN Console. Or you could do LAN console. Or if you prefer, LAN console. There is also LAN console. Or in a pinch, I'd try LAN console. Nothing to buy nothing to install on the System i. The required software comes with the machine and works find on any Win2K or WinXP or Win2003 server; OK It's not supported on Server but it works fine.Thin console is cool if you don't care about getting to the console remotely.- Larry pnelson@xxxxxxxxxx wrote:I'd go with the thin console. If it doesn't work out as expected, slap in a twinax card
