I'd LPAR if I could but I can't on this model 270 - 2248 processor box. 
The IPCS is currently unused and it would be great if I could use it for 
a Linux box.

Remember, even on the newer 5xx boxes you do NOT need a HMC solution to 
configure Linux lpars.  You only need HMC to configure multiple i5/os 
lpars, or to do Capacity Upgrade on Demand.

Is it additional hardware concerns?  Most of that can be worked around 
with things like vLan.
