I agree with Chris on the Raid controller.  Configuring the disks for RAID 
is a great way to go.  Whatever you do, use at least 4 drives in your raid 
set.  Three is supported, but will run like a slug in a salt mine.  Not 
sure why, but it is so bad we opened a pmr on it.  Not the only person 
who's ran into this issue.  We gave up and added the additional drive. 
Huge difference.
