Aaron, You have to have the HMC if you want multiple i5/OS partitions. You don't need the LPAR if you have only one i5/OS partition and have the rest be hosted Linux partitions. Hosted Linux partitions don't have there own physical hardware assigned (DASD/LAN). They use the host i5/OS partitions hardware. If you want non-hosted Linux partitions, then (I believe) you do need the HMC. But again itdepends on what type of partitioning you want to do. I just want multiple OS400 LPARS - development vs. prod type deal. Let's also say I wanted to do a third, forth or fifth LPAR, what are the software/hardware/licensing ramifications of that? Just found the HMC pricing in the "Quick Pricer" pdf. Looks like it is feature 7310-C05 and costs $1830 list (not including cables, which I don't know what I need) - whew, that's expensive just for the need to do LPARS. Do I need it if all I am doing are OS400 LPARS?
