Circuit Cellar magazine had an article a few years ago about a package
someone developed to do this. They interfaced a GPS to a cellphone, and it
would call home anytime it noticed it's location had changed.

Seriously, though, you would think one of the listers who works for a
trucking company would know of a device they use to track their trucks.

The truck tracking system that we use would not work particularly well in
this scenario, as it requires a great big saucer thing be attached to the
tracked item. I think the kind of thing you are thinking about would be
smaller and hidden. The trick is that the device needs to be able to
alert some server somewhere of its position history periodically, so you
needs something like GPS + cellular transmitter. A quick google search
for 'real time gps' should turn up some devices that would work. One
thing to be aware of (at least we find this with trucks) is that
buildings, geographical features and other obstructions can limit a
device's ability to report its position. I'm not sure if these tracking
devices would work if they were jammed inside a computer case.

Adam
