If you have to drive a nail into a piece of wood, is it less expensive to go buy a hammer or to go dig your own iron ore, refine it into steel, mix it with the proper alloys, forge it into a hammerhead, cut down a tree, craft the handle, fit the handle and the head together, and so on, and so on?
It depends on whether you're charging someone for the time it takes to mine, refine, forge and fit. Joe
