David:My main concern is, if many people who regularly participate in these lists (MIDRANGE-L, etc.) start using this new chat room, they will be chatting with each other, and the rest of us will not benefit from any knowledge shared in the chat room, that would normally be shared via these lists, because the exchange of information in a "chat room" is only available to those who are "in" the "chat room" at that time, and if someone is busy chatting, they might not want to take the extra effort to also post a (redundant) e-mail to the list...
Another benefit of these e-mail lists is that you can go back and search for topics and find answers to questions that were asked months or even years ago, so this accumulated knowledge continues to benefit others. (I don't think you can do that with a chat room.)
What are the goals of having this chat room? Thanks, Mark S. Waterbury
