My main concern is, if many people who regularly participate in these
lists (MIDRANGE-L, etc.) start using this new chat room, they will be
chatting with each other, and the rest of us will not benefit from any
knowledge shared in the chat room, that would normally be shared via
these lists, because the exchange of information in a "chat room" is
only available to those who are "in" the "chat room" at that time, and
if someone is busy chatting, they might not want to take the extra
effort to also post a (redundant) e-mail to the list...

Well, considering the general activity of the chat room, that's not
really a major concern. The three of us who are in there on a regular
basis tend to just shoot he breeze most of the time.

What are the goals of having this chat room?

Well, it's more a social experiment than anything else.

If serious technical discussions start ... I'll probably post a
transcript of the chat to a list or the imho blog.

If I can find a suitable web client, I might start some scheduled chats
with directed topics.
